The re-created 10. Kompagnie, Großherzoglich Mecklenburgisches Füsilier-Regiment NR.90 Kaiser Wilhelm (or as it is more commonly known as -- FR90) was born in 2004 to a group of WW2 historical interpreters and reenactors that were looking for more "living history" than just "burning powder" events.
We had participated in a couple "Russian Front" World War Two tactical events which are hosted by "Grossdeutschland" at the Caesar Krauss Great War Memorial Site. This site is owned by the Great War Association. Can you tell we simply fell in love with the Great War Associations WW1 battlefield, it has everything you ever wanted in a re-enacting site, opposing trenches, communication trenches, bombed out cemetery, dug-outs, a shell cratered no-man's land and some units even have actual underground bunkers.
We had toyed with the idea of joining one of the pre-existing German units and decided we would rather form our own unit. Instead of becoming an unit from one of the well known Germanic states, we chose the state of Mecklenburg. We felt this could offer us a chance of doing something entirely unique and let us further explore "the hobby."
We contacted the "G-8" which is the governing body of the Great War Association and started the ball rolling. We found several challenges with obtaining the right equipment and uniforms along our way. Slowly we are jumping over all the hurdles and we are "doing it right."
In the Fall of 2004, we attended our first WW1 event at the Caesar Krauss Great War Memorial Site near Newville, PA. We can honestly say the entire weekend was simply "Great!" Our sister unit Infanterie - Regiment Nr. 459 (another German unit we share the trenches with) shared their bunker with us and we fought the Allies and shared their "Kameradschaft." These guys showed us what "WW1 reenacting" was all about.
The entire weekend was filled with the best reenacting we have ever done! There was some downtime but our hosts (JR459) kept up the living history by including us in their first person scenarios. We participated in several trench raids throughout the weekend and re-pelled quite a few allied attacks. There was something going on all weekend long.
