5. Standards for German Non-Mandatory Items.
The following items are not required for participation in GWA or GWA-sponsored events. Acceptable colors for knit garments are shades of gray or field gray.
a. GREATCOAT (Mantel)
1. Older Model
This garment will be made only of stone grey wool or wool blend. The sleeves will not have cuffs, and the back will be made of a single, non-seamed piece of fabric. The coat will be single breasted, and the 6 front buttons and those used to retain the shoulder straps will be the rimmed crown pattern in bright (tombac) or painted. The coat will reach to the wearer's mid-calf. The collar will be fitted with a single hook and eye to hold the collar together when closed. There will be two slanted hip pockets on the coat front; these will be closed with a non-buttoning flap. The back will have two belt halves at waist level; these will be joined at the center of the back by two-rimmed crown buttons and matching buttonholes. The bottom edge will be unhemmed. Shoulder straps may either match the coat or be made of field grey as worn with the tunic.
2. Newer Models
This garment may be made of slate grey or field grey wool or wool blend. The general shape and fit is the same as the older model. The sleeves will end in turn-back cuffs not narrower than 4.5 inches. The back shall be made of at least two pieces and, at a minimum, below the back belt, will be pleated. Buttons shall close the central slit, of this pleated portion. The back belt will be as with older models or, optionally, may have only one button. If the latter method of closure is used, a hook and eye must be present to keep the belts in alignment across the back. Pockets and pocket flaps as on older models. Rimmed pattern buttons will be worn on the grey garment; only the rimless pattern will be used on the field grey coat. Shoulder straps for the grey coat as with the older model, only field grey straps may be worn with the filed grey coat. Field grey coats shall have a reseda collar. The bottom edge will be unhemmed.
b. GLOVES (Handschuhe)
Personnel portraying the rank of Sergeant and below will wear knit woolen gloves only. These may be grey or field grey.
c. SCARVES AND TOQUES
Scarves may be grey or field grey woolen knit. Non-garish civilian pattern scarves, including muted plaids, are permitted; these may be of woolen knit, wool, or wool or fur felt. Toques must be of grey or field grey woolen knit only. Scarves and toques will only be worn in conjunction with the greatcoat and must be mostly concealed beneath that garment. The wearing of scarves or toques under the tunic with the tunic collar open is prohibited.
d. PACK (Tornister)
The pack will be of fabric or fabric and leather; the back flap may be of unshaven cow-hide or plain canvas in a tan, field grey, grey, or ochre color. The pack will have a rigid internal frame, and the straps will be detachable as on original pieces. The straps will end in hooks for attaching to the cartridge pouches and will be equipped with an auxiliary strap which fastens to the back bottom. The pack must have loops provisions for three overcoat straps (one on each side and one located on the top center of the pack flap) and double loops on the flap to accommodate attaching the mess tin.
e. SHELTER HALF (Zeltbahn)
The shelter half will be of tan, grey, field grey, or ochre canvas. It will be approximately 62 x 62 inches and have a center seam running the length of the plane. There will be 4 large grommets (one at each corner), and each of these will have 3 smaller grommets positioned around them. Additionally, at the center of each side, there will be two small grommets separated by approximately 3 inches. The shelter half will have 64 metal dish buttons, positioned back to back, on both sides around the outside hem; these will be evenly spaced approximately 7.5 inches apart. There will be a buttonhole at each button position.
f. TENT EQUIPMENT (Zeltausrüstung und Beutel)
The tent accessory bag will be of grey, field grey, tan, or ochre cloth. It is approximately 14.5 inches long (exclusive of the flap) and ca. 4.75 inches wide. The flap, which is approximately 2.75 inches deep, has two buttonholes, which correspond with 2 metal dish buttons on the bag body.
Approximately 4.25 inches from both ends of the bag, there will be a leather strap and buckle arrangement to allow the bag to be attached to the pack. The bag will contain a length of tent rope, three tent pins, and three tent poles. The rope will be natural jute cord. The tent pins may be all metal, or wood with metal tips and tops. The pins will be in natural metal/wood colors only. The tent poles will be of natural wood with blank metal tips and tops.
g. DRINKING CUP (Trinkbecher)
